Tree and Hedge Planting

(History being processed from past to present – got to May 18 2022)

2022 – April 1st – Fillers for tree planting

Some of the original young trees had been nipped off by rabbits. These whips filled in the spaces. They came from The Dingle and at the moment can’t remember exactly what species they were!

Thickened hedge along lane above gate with both copper and green beech.

More added on December 12th.

2020 – March – Tree and Hedge whips – New Forest and bottom hedges.

We bought 500 whips from The Woodland Trust:

Blackthorn – 108
Crab Apple – 47
Dog Rose – 33
Elder – 17
Goat Willow – 30
Field maple (Acer campestre) – 60
Hawthorne – 105
Hazel – 48
Holly (Ilex aquifolium) – 60
Rowan – 62,
Sessile oak – 15
Silver birch – 15
Yew (Taxus baccata) – 60

Trees were planted in a belt along the North side of the bottom field and hedging was used all down the North side and around the South-East corner area. The planting was done by Geronimo and was a very wet March so there were not many pictures.

2016 – June 1st – Tree Nursery

For a time we moved self-sown trees to one of the vegetable beds pending planting in final location. We came to regret this as by the time we got round to moving them they were very large. Plus, they monopolised one of the vegetable beds. We now keep them confined to pots.
